My Top 7 Mystery Anime
This list will be looking at the 7 of the best mystery anime out there. There’s a lot of anime out there so please keep in mind these are my personal choices as I have not seen all the anime out there.
This is for those who love the beautiful combination of mystery and anime and are looking for new, exciting, and thrilling shows to watch. I guarantee these are some of the best you’ll see out there.
For this list, only anime with mystery being one of its main elements will be focused on. They may fall into other genres such as horror, action, or thriller but mystery has to be the main component. It also includes anime that are still ongoing and those that have been concluded.
Without further ado, let’s get started.
7- Baccano!
At number 7 we have an anime that for me is one of the best anime released in the mid-2000s. This anime brings together a bunch of unique and unforgettable characters who have their fates intertwined throughout the show.
I love this show because almost all the main characters will leave an impression on you. It also has an excellent blend of thriller and suspense and always manages to find a way to raise the stakes even higher with every episode.
The only problem I think you would have with this show is that it is really fast-paced and gives you no time to breathe. Also, the different time-lines makes it confusing sometimes. But if you get past all that it’s a really interesting show to watch.
6- Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)
I know, a lot of you might say it’s not an outright mystery anime and wonder why it’s on this list. The truth is, it has a lot of mystery elements for me to ignore. Also, it’s a really great show.
It’s basically about humanity fighting for survival against the titular titans and trying to figure out their origins. This show serves up plot twist after plot twist and doesn’t give you any time to rest. It will leave your mind blown every time. Some may find the plot convoluted and confusing but trust me it is not.
It has really great animation and character designs that will leave you amazed all the time. I love the connection it gives the audience to its characters because you can’t help but get invested in them.
5- Hyouka
If you’re looking for a perfect blend of slice of life, romance, and mystery, Hyouka is the one for you. This mystery anime is unique in the sense that it has no real antagonist, agenda, or evil it’s fighting against.
The anime follows the main characters; Hotaro Oreki, Eru Chitanda, Satoshi Fukube, and Mayaka Ibara as they try to solve the disappearance of Eru Chitanda’s uncle. Along the way, they also solve the various mysteries and debunk hoaxes relating to their school.
It has amazing visuals and you can’t help but fall in love with it.
4- The Promised Neverland
Oh wow, this anime. Nothing prepared me for how good it was going to be. I mean, absolutely nothing. At first, you think it’s a coming of age/slice of life anime then the first twist hits you and you’re like “what is going on?”
This anime is wonderful in every aspect; the theme song, the animation, the story, and the many things at stake. It’s a big ball of suspense and mystery. It’s just one big roller coaster ride you’ll never forget.
It’s a complete 10/10 and I assure you will thoroughly enjoy it. Let’s hope the second season will be as enjoyable as the first.
3- Durarara!!
There aren’t many anime better then Durarara. It will easily enter any top 10 anime of all-time list, I am that confident. It would have been top of my list if not for how great the other two are.
It’s a lot like it’s cousin series Baccano!, mentioned at the beginning of this list, but better in every aspect. It features many unique characters and all their destinies collide in the city of Ikebukuro. It’s an excellent blend of mystery, suspense, and the supernatural. It makes you wish it could go on forever when it’s all over.
I absolutely love this anime and it’s a good recommendation for anime newcomers.
2- Erased
This might seem controversial, but my preference, and I absolutely believe it deserves to be number two. It enters this list for the theme song alone.
This anime has so much depth for a 12-episode anime, you almost forget it was that short. The anime uses the hiding in plain sight technique and still manages to catch you off guard. It also leaves such an impression that you will never forget.
It keeps you rooting for the success of the main characters from the beginning to the end.
1- Monster
Before I even started this list, this was my undisputed number one. I didn’t consider mystery anime because it’s just the best one out there. The anime is so real and grounded, it’s scary. It is an immense work of art, with incredible writing and proper storytelling.
It has so many twists and turns it will leave your head spinning. The suspense is bone-chilling and you can’t stop yourself from just going to the next episode. Monster opens your mind to different ideas and realities you never even considered. You will have yourself questioning your own morality after watching this anime.
It is a complete 11/10 in every aspect. A 100% must watch for any anime fan.
